Times change. On the face of it you could assume that we were more racist in those days.
We weren't because we had no malice towards non us. It was mostly thoughtlessness when describing peoples whom we had never seen or spoken to.

I used to read it and there it was.

I'm a real American history obsessive now. I'd forgotten all about the generic stereotypes of Little Plum until you mentioned it.

The comics only made a 'comedy' adaptation of an existing stereotype.

But yes, more or less any cinematic illustration of the West is very inaccurate.
