By elections always have results which are distorted. I can't see UKIP getting any MPs at the next general election. Maybe a couple at most.

By-elections do always contain a proportion of protest voting; but there are two longer term trends - Liberal Democrat decline & UKIP growth, particularly in marginal seats.

If the next parliament is hung, I can see Labour going into coalition with the Lib Dems, minus Clegg and Alexander.

Then again, the LDs will probably lose even more seats than last time.
