I love...
...grunge above all else. Closely followed by metal, synth-pop, indie/alternative, prog, hiphop, DnB etc.

But the greatest single piece of music of all time is the full length 1812 Festival Overture by Tchaikovsky. Should keep you busy for 15 minutes and leave you tingly and exhausted.

@Gibbon: I'd add anything by Duke Ellington or Chick Corea.

Or if you fancy something a bit more funky (bit still kind of laid back); Gil Scott Heron & Roy Ayers.

Or anything on Blue Note records for quality funk.

Excellent choices. I'd also recommend Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert (there's an umlaut on the "o") and anything by Count Basie. And Gunther's right about The Duke.

As for classical, Keith Jarrett did some Mozart piano concertos too. ("Too many notes.")

Hear hear to 'Kind of Blue'

Must have fallen asleep to that more often than anything else - great 'background music' if you know what I mean.

For classical, you can't beat 'A Lark Ascending' by Vaughan Williams, unless you put on Allegri: Miserere Mei, Deus - one of those stunningly beautiful Gregorian chant type things that you'll recognise - it's 15 minutes of pure bliss for the ears.

I'm also a big fan of Gorecki 3rd Symphony. Mrs G can't listen to it as it makes her cry but I can lie on the sofa and listen to the full thing - I've melted into the surroundings long before the end of the first movement.
