Re doctors: Your choice of which one to register with is limited by your postcode. I used to live on the boundry of my postcode, and my commute to work passed straight past a health centre, but I wasn't allowed to register there. Instead, had to register at a differnet one that was perpendicular to my commmute to work and had shorter opening hours, but on the plus side, I had an excuse for missing work when I had an appointment.
Last place I was in, didn't register until a year after I had moved in, and that was only so I could have some vaccinations for a trip abroad.
