@TGB: The alternative is that I answer your plea and Gaz you (which is what I did).
@Mrs. L:
To become someone's fan, just make them your friend. To make a new friend, click the "Friends' Activity" link, then the "add more friends" link, and type out part (or all) of their username and press 'Go'. It should present a list of users with "clear, ignore, friend" radioboxes. Press the 'friend' radiobox and 'update' to make them a friend. There's currently a bug where if the username contains punctuation, you get an error-message. To work round the bug, type a part of the username without the punctuation, and instead of the error, you'll get a list of users including ones with the punctuation.
