Sparkie update...They've been round and reckon it was a loose connection in the ancient fusebox (I've personally seen loose connections burn motherboards and low-voltage lights). They're replacing it with breakers.
I like this as it means I haven't been paying my electricity company the privilege for sending power directly to ground.
