Are they maybe trying to stitch you up with more than your share?
(i.e. you're the only one they can ask for money, so they're trying to get you to bear more than 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 or whatever of the burden?)

I'd suggest asking them to produce at least two estimates for the work they say needs done, and work out your share from there. Also, if you can (and it won't cost you too much), get your own indpeendent estimate for comparison.
