There are differences in instruments, even between otherwise identical models but that's not what I'm talking about.
Reproduction of sound should be just that - reproduction of sound, nothing added or taken away. Hence the 'pink noise in=pink noise out' thing. If the system doesn't do that it is distorting the recording and you're not hearing what was actually recorded.

Yes and the quality of sound reproduction has been compromised each time the industry has moved to smaller formats with increased capacity.
