It's the self satisfaction as much as anything
Working for yourself gives you a much better feeling inside than being a 9-5 drone for someone else, even if the wages are gash.

I took the decision a few years ago to fuck off my reasonably well-paid but soul destroying IT job in favour of going to uni to do the thing that I love and try to make that into a career rather than a hobby.

Obviously plan's gone off the rails slightly due to external financial factors, I may have to win the lottery or murder a millionaire...
