It's well weirdthe way teaching jobs always have to be offered on the day.
Not aware of another industry where it happens.
I have heard of cases where they put all the interviewees in a room together afterwards and don't let them leave until they've made the offer to someone - fuck that! Be glad they didn't do that to you.
