From some recent work I've been doing...It very much varies where the money has gone, i.e. which bank has wrongly received the money. Some Banks are very good and can sort this out within 1-2 days. If it's been sent to one of the less organised banks, apparently it can take up to 6 weeks to sort out.
If you didn't give them the wrong account number (Did you call them? They should have a recording of the call.) Then I'd certainly say you should get some sort of compensation for the lost interest and inconvenience.
