Does anyone here know if it's possible in publish a book independently of an established publisher?
I'm just wondering if it's possible. Otherwise I'm looking for advice on finding a publisher.
FYI, non-fiction, travel, possibly involving charity.
Advice please, lovely QOTWers!

If you're just after a book which you can share with friends and family then go to lulu.com - it's the current way to do vanity publishing.
If you want a publisher who will pay you for your work and market your book then take a look in the current Writers and Artists Yearbook - most publishers large and small will be in there and you can decide then which one would be best suited to what you want to publish.
The best way to find a publisher that would be best for you is to look at what sort of things they normally publish.
Once you've decided which half dozen or so publishers would be interested in your book then you need to approach them properly - the current Yearbook will tell you and there are also plenty of guides to this online.
Alternatively go looking for an agent...
Although once you have one of them that's not necessarily the end of your woes - a good friend of mine has a novel sitting with an agent and it's done the rounds of publishers all of whom say that the book is beautifully written but sadly not likely to be profitable.
Good luck!
