Most of 'Garage Inc' is pure golddust - 'Astronomy' in particular is one of my favourite songs. Can I make a suggestion for 15.? All around the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan), which I would consider to be one of the best cover songs of all time. Although 'Whiskey in the Jar' is a close second.

and All along the watchtower is one of the greatest cover songs ever, along with the Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson
I was however going for covers that my drummer hadn't heard before
I heartily recommend number 1. I think it is superior to the original. In fact I think there are only 2 on the list that aren't.
Guess which ;-)

3 and 12?
Haven't actually heard either cover version, I just love the originals so much, I find it hard to believe anyone's done it better.

I have to agree with you about Imagine, I prefer the APC version to the original!

Hurt by Johnny Cahs I'd have instead of 5
Such Great Heights by Iron and Wine would be good
All Along the Watchtower, taborine man or anything else by dylan by someone else.

The Eels live cover of Left Banke's Pretty Ballerina. The drum kit consisted of a suitcase and a bin. But then I worship the eels, so I'm biased.

hence Rusty Cage instead of Hurt
and the instances of two songs by one artist
plus, Monster Magnet and Metallica are awesome and Cake amuse me.
