I'm going to pimp this again
www.myspace.com/dumberthantheaveragebear

new recordings of my band from the weekend, in case you missed the post yesterday ;-)

Whilst I've already heard these, twice now,
I'd recommend listening to 'em!
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 10:30, Reply)
These are most full of win
I approve. Particularly (the very John Lee Hooker-esque) 'Blind.'
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 10:46, Reply)
I thought the harmonica in Blind
sounds quite a lot like "On the road again" possibly by Canned Heat
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 10:51, Reply)
Yes, it does a bit
In fact the guitar riff is quite similar to Fried Hockey Boogie (though I believe the Heat adapted/pinched that one from Hooker's Boogie Chillun). Good stuff. It's nice to hear a band actually doing interesting stuff with their guitars rather than the standard "wall of noise" that so many bands default to these days.
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 10:53, Reply)
*hides behind wall of noise*
*cries*
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 10:59, Reply)
we come from a lot of different influences
which helps I think.

Most of our stuff is kind of bluesy, but we have a pretty wide range. Stops us getting bored!

Something that actually helped with the wall of noise thing was that our drum sound was really good.

Normally I think we sound a bit thin so probably play too much, but during the recording sessions I pared it down quite a lot to provide some accents and stuff.

Thoroughly enjoayble weekend it was!
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:01, Reply)
It's alright, Kaol. There's a time and place for the wall of noise
And most serious heavy music wouldn't sound the same without it. I'm just fed up with every indie band defining the difference between a verse and a chorus by tapping their distortion pedals.
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:01, Reply)
I'm just
sick of every "indie" band being a bunch of talentless cunts who think The Libertines somehow redefined music.
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:02, Reply)
^ That as well
.
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:03, Reply)
my main aim
with my band is to not sound like every other bland pile of shit that's out there.

Coldplay, I'm looking at you.

They aren't awful, but they are so overrated that my raging bile ducts can't help but spew forth, at length.

U2 are the same. cunts.
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:07, Reply)
Well...
My distort pedal is on all the time :p

I fuckin' hate the majority of "indie bands" though.
Fuckin' Libertines. Coke-head shite-mongers.

EDIT: Vipros, I agree, same as, I try and make our stuff a bit different too.
But you've certainly achieved what you're aiming for :)
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:08, Reply)
what kaol said
coz I'm a scuzzy punk at heart :0)
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:10, Reply)
My distortion is on a lot too
but I've learned to turn the gain down to about halfway ;-)

Kaol: thanks! I like what little I've heard of your stuff. Would be good to hear some more!
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:11, Reply)
Well, we got the
Korg D888 last week, and had a first attempt with it, just live recording some stuff.
Imputted the guitar, bass and mic from their line-outs, and only had one mic on the drums, but I could send you a couple of rough tracks if you like?
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:15, Reply)
yeah, that would be good!
we had 8 mikes on our drumkit the other day, and an ambient mike in the room.

Sounded fucking ace though. It was an awesome sounding kit. Toms sounded like George of the Jungle
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:16, Reply)
8!
Amazing!
I think we'll get some decent quality stuff from this machine of ours, I mean, obviously not studio-quality, but far better than one mic in the middle of the room!

Anyway, I've sent you those two tracks :)
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:20, Reply)
^ Kaol
Is there a myspaz or similar deelie where we can hear your band?
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:21, Reply)
nice, I'll have a listen
although hotmail won't let me download them, so I've had to forward them to work

stupid hotmail
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:25, Reply)
Nope, I'm afraid there isn't
We've got a myspace, but no songs on it yet, just a place-holder really!

Once we've recorded some stuff to a level that we're happy to release to the general public, I'll do a Vipros-style pimping :)

EDIT: Bloody hotmail!
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:26, Reply)
I like!
To Hell with Good Intentions has a great bass and drum sound. Reminds me a bit of the first Offspring album, in that it's dark and dirty.

good stuff.

You are already benefitting from that Korg I reckon. Drums came out pretty well with just one mic!

If you can, I'd suggest miking the bass and guitar amps, line outs tend to lose something from the sound you get from an amp.

Also, if you are thinking of buying microphones then get Shure SM57s.

edit: cock, now the batteries on my ipod have run out. I'm going to have to spend the rest of the day listening to Kaol....
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:36, Reply)
Yep, I agree with the mic stuff!
The drums were mic'd with my SM58, from near my drummer's right knee for that.

He's about to get a set of drum mics, anyway, and we've got a mate with a degree in Music Tech who's gonna lend us three SM58's for whatever we want, so yep, mic the amps :)

Glad you liked it though *grins*
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:42, Reply)
mic placed by the knee worked nicely, good job!
always good to hear some different music.

It's like appreciating a fine wine. I'm getting hints of Dead Kennedys, with overtones of early Offspring and an Eightiess Matchbox B-Line Disaster finish.
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:49, Reply)
Interesting!
What's most interesting is that I've never been much of an Offspring fan!
DK and Eighties Matchbox though... Yes :D

EDIT: I think my drummer might be an Offspring fan though.

My guitarist mostly listens to stuff like Manowar and Megadeth. But he doesn't write anything.
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:52, Reply)
Your guitarist
sounds awesome.
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:58, Reply)
Listen to the first Offspring album if you haven't before
it's much more raw and dark than the others. I think you'd like it. There's a great song called Beheaded, about chopping off people's heads!

While I like a few Megadeth songs, I think they are mostly cheesy and Dave Mustaine is a penis.

I'm a Metallica man, through and through!

Although that did take a back seat to Pink Floyd for quite a while.
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 11:59, Reply)
Agreed on Megadeth.
I much prefer Metallica.

Although at the moment I'm listening to obscene amounts of Monster Magnet :D
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 12:10, Reply)
Monster Magnet FTW
If I were a band I would be Monster Magnet
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 12:19, Reply)
They're fuckin' awesome!
We're listening to God Said No today, it's our Tuesday tradition, ever since we mis-heard the lyrics to "Doomsday".
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 12:20, Reply)
I really dig 4 way diablo, the album is cracking
my favourite lyrics are from the beginning of Wall of fire

"well I'm back, I've got a cock made out of platinum..."
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 12:22, Reply)
I've got a mission that I can't turn down.
I'm killing Nazi Zombies in a German town.

*grins*

Wicked song!
I've been listening to that album a lot, but I keep having to skip "You're Alive", I don't like it much.
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 12:24, Reply)
damn my ipod for running out!
need to listen to some Monster Magnet when I get home!!!
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 12:27, Reply)
That's just poor planning on your part, isn't it?
:p

*sings along to Queen Of You*
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 12:28, Reply)
it is poor planning
but I have a shuffle, so it doesn't tell you what the battery is like until it runs out
(, Tue 9 Dec 2008, 12:31, Reply)
I've got a wind-up mp3 player - it never runs out.
No joke.
