Most of what I dois fairly repetitive (i.e we do the same things on a weekly or monthly basis) so we write our own software front ends for them, then it's just a matter of selecting parameters in drop downs and clicking buttons to run our reports/queries etc.
If you want to learn about databases I'd start with SQL, it's fairly logical and widely used.
