I want to create a website with a members only area
Is this as hard as google makes out?
(, Wed 7 Jan 2009, 16:51, 12 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
Yes. Perhaps even harder than they let on.
Here, have some consolation fluff.

Pfffft
you said members and hard in the same sentence.

I was going to offer some practical advice
but I've been inspired.

I'm going to call you a cumbubble instead.

CUMBUBBLE!

Edit: I've quit swearing, but I think this is justified: that is one FUCKING cute rabbit.

I must agree
that bunny is cute as hell.

Not really. I did it about 7 or 8 years ago but haven't done it since.

Sorry, I thought you said something about having sex.

Depends how you define 'hard'
You can hide it behind an htaccess file where you manually hardcode the users and their passwords, or you can have a db of users with login and members pages generated on the server served if the user is logged in.

You'll need registration code and forgotten password code. You'll need to store these details somewhere.

It's not rocket science, but if you're hiding behind the sofa after reading the above then I wouldn't recommend trying it yourself. Well, unless it's you doing it for yourself for fun and learning, in which case it's a good exercise.

Oh, and apparently I need to call you a donkey felcher. So there, you Donkey Felching son of a badger's arse :-p

Good form, Oli :)
If it's sweet and simple, your server should allow you to assign a username and password to a specific directory. So, as long as you're not serving completely confidential/paid content (ie something someone could profit from giving passwords out for) then just use the server to secure your content.

I made one with a members only section.
I am not a coder and have nothing to do with computers other than the fact i like to use them. I used something called Joomla. It's not too hard, but takes a bit of work.

I made a fairly simple one...
...using php for a website I run.

It's fairly simple, and displays two different states, one if you get the username and password correct and another if you get it wrong.

The downside is there is only one username/password for everyone and it has to be updated manually.

Thank you everyone,
especially for the sexy insults I got quite loose just thinking about them.

I need a members area so I can give people pictures of my penis.

Actually its for a rather lame Cornish music site idea and I want people to become members to access the MP3's but hey ho. Thankies all
