When I was about 14, perms became the fashion and I was the first girl in my school to get my hair curled. Suddenly I felt quite attractive and this coincided with a boy asking me out for the first time. He was called Colin and looked like a Colin, which is why I declined. But both these events made me realise I might actually be quite nice looking and my self-esteem was raised by a notch or two.
I always had fairly long hair in my adult life till I hit my early twenties and discovered same sex shennanigans. Having, I felt, boring hair and wanting to show my solidarity for my fellow lezzies, I got it all cut off very short. I loved it and it was soooooo great to get up in the morning and just wet my head, give a quick towel dry and I was ready to go. I kept my hair virtually the same for the next 15 years. Boys like girls with short hair too ya know.
I've been growing my hair for over a year now and the slight grey at the temples when my hair was short, that made me look like an androgenous Cary Grant, is now a swath of dry and brittle grey that makes me look like an old women with a distrust of hairdressers. I'm keeping it though because there comes a time when you just can't keep pretending to be young any more. I think I've reached that point.
