They've been pretty weak on that front since the first G4 Powerbooks with wireless POD
Although they did get better with each successive model, the Intel ones still aren't amazing.

I first noticed it when using internet on a Powerbook and a PC laptop side by side, the PC laptop picked up shitloads more networks from neighbours etc. As I said, I'd always put it down to the antennae being inside a metal case, but the real kicker was installing Windows on a MacBook Pro; with the laptop in exactly the same position, a reboot from OSX into Windows will see a lot more networks (assuming they're there to be found, of course) so there must be something software-related affecting it as well.

Edit: further to Noel's reply Ape, it's in Control Panel/Regional and Language Options. Remove the US one as well as adding the UK one and it shouldn't give you that stupid language bar thing.
