I think the difference is that a farm tractor can have loads of different duties, muck spreading, mowing, an auger attached or any one of a million other things, whereas a JCB etc is usually designed for a more specific role, so I'd refer to those as diggers or whatever.
We had to borrow the biggest tractor I've ever seen to pull the generator wagon out of the mud after our festival last year. The lorry + trailer was 34 tonne gross and the mud was pretty soft, it only just managed it. The tractor dug 3' deep holes in the floor wheelspinning!
Edit: @ roota, nah, was years before I moved there. I suspect in Liverpool they're not stupid enough to leave the keys under the seat!
