The best toastis made by using one of those grid things that you clamp under the lid of an Aga.
Failing that, get a Dualit. They're not style over substance at all, they genuinely are the best. I bit the bullet and bought one (the Marmite one of course!) after getting through about 5 sub-£10 ones. Cheap shit is a false economy.
Edit: I know you say you can't afford one, so you might have to steal one.
