I discovered
four planets
four of Jupiter's moons
three galaxies
six star clusters
a handful of nebulae


with my first £70-from-Argos telescope. And I've seen 300+ shooting stars.

My folks bought me a cracking pair of binocs
for christmas a few years back. If I had a few hundred quid I'd get a good reflector telescope and a dedicated CCD camera to play with.

Buy a good pair of binoculars first. Seriously, spending fifty quid on a pair of good quality 7x50s will stand you in very good stead, will give you a chance to learn your way around the sky and make a more informed decision about what you want in a telescope.

Would a standard
camera shutter release do the job? If you've got a threaded shutter button one of these should do the trick - I've been using one on my film SLR for years.
