Get the travelcardIt will be cheaper, unless you have an Oyster card.
They're trying to get everyone on Oyster, so a 'return' is just 2 x singles - will be £8 for that journey.
So yeah, get the travelcard, or get an Oyster card when you get to London and then use that, may as well have one as they're a lot cheaper than buying tickets.
