How about
sectarian qualifiers? As in, only one representative in the group stages per major religion - some interesting Catholic/Protestant scraps in the early stages, and who knows, perhaps a shock trip to the finals for the Greek Orthodox Church?

You'd have to give some careful thought to what counts as a sect rather than a separate religion mind, are Mormons a branch of Christianity or are they batshit enough to count on their own?
