it takes a while
I'd estimate that I was shit for 8 years, rubbish for another 2, mediocre for 2 and have recently progressed to "I can hold my own"

Yeah does take a while
Try getting Powertab editor or guitar pro... they helped me heaps when I was starting out

When I first started playing
all of 15 years ago, I got a few books from this series:

All the songs are in simple tab form, have chord grids and in general the books are highly recommended.
