As an aside, when I was little my Grandad told me if you wore a hat too much you'd go bald. He cited his own baldness as evidence. I didn't wear a hat for years.

so a hat will apply mild pressure to weakened hair, similarly pulling your hair back in a ponytail stresses the hair and weakens it
