If you're redecorating
you'll want to clean the walls and ceiling in order to make sure you don't end up with dust and shit painted onto the walls. It's basic stuff this.

Use fine sandpaper and then wipe down with a dilute sugar soap solution.

Use good quality gloss on the wooden fittings
otherwise it will go yellow if you use cheap stuff.

Make sure you masking tape them to avoid getting wall paint on it then.
And take the tape off before the paint dries or it comes off in flakes.
