i have 2 chequebooks, 1 personal and 1 business...
haven't used the personal one in about 2 years but use the business one to pay trade accounts every month.
the ONLY reason the banks don't want us to use them is cos they cost them more in time. which means money. but the system suits me (and many other small/medium businesses) just fine...

not the personal one, for obvious reasons...
but 3 or 4 cheques a month is pretty easy to keep track of!
even for someone who didn't start a business for the love of paperwork ;-)

you deduct the value of the cheque you just wrote from the balance of the account...
on the page inside the front/back cover of the chequebook, thus keeping a real-time running total for the account. so when your bank statement arrives you can mutter WTF cos cheques you wrote 5 days ago haven't yet registered with the bank but you have already accounted for it yourself, leaving a discrepancy and sometimes much confusion and hilarity!
