It doesn't have to be "new" new,
But I wouldn't be averse to a new car since I won't be trading it in.

my car gets 60mpg if you drive it sensibly
it's a nice drive too, and was cheap. probably older than you want though.

Is it better than an 11 year old 106?
I want one that's comfy for long journeys as I drive a lot. A tape deck would be a bonus, but air con is essential. And it needs to be Diesel.

I've got a Seat Toledo SE TDi
it's 1.9l diesel saloon, 110bhp. very comfortable, got climate control, cruise control, tape deck and cd multichanger, all electric windows etc.

it's a W reg, cost me about £3800 when it had about 60k miles on it.

I'd highly recommend one. it really is very comfortable for long journeys. solidly built because it's all vw and audi bits.
