OK, let me explain.
Magpies are a sort of black and white crow.

The superstition is that if you see one magpie it'll bring you sorrow, but if you see a pair you'll be happy.

Thing is, they're such antisocial birds that you generally only ever see them on their own.

but I imagine if you see them often you're worried a lot
maybe thats the whole meaning of it anyway, get you depressed because you think there will be something bad happening

That it's not deep seated worry.

It's more a "Oops there's a Magpie. What's going to befall me, eh? Tee hee hee" sort of thing.

Magpies are a very common bird in this country. If I had a panic attack every time I saw one I'd be confined to bed by now.
