I am superstitious to the max.
Whenever I think of something bad [i.e. possibility of car accident, death, distruction] I have to tap wood three times.
If a black cat crosses my path when I'm driving I make three circles on the windshield with my fingertip.
I do not walk under ladders and I don't even own an umbrella.
Am I crazy? Yes. Do you have any superstitions?

I make a point of walking under ladders just to prove to the world what a load of cobblers it is.

do you often open umbrellas indoors?

I also put my shoes on the table which is supposed to be bad luck.

I brushed up against a wall and got paint all over my coat. The reason the ladder was there in the first place was so they could paint the wall.

But I still get jumpy about the single magpie thing.

Magpies are a sort of black and white crow.
The superstition is that if you see one magpie it'll bring you sorrow, but if you see a pair you'll be happy.
Thing is, they're such antisocial birds that you generally only ever see them on their own.

And probably is.
But it's my very own shit and if I want to worry about it I will.
Thanks.

but I imagine if you see them often you're worried a lot
maybe thats the whole meaning of it anyway, get you depressed because you think there will be something bad happening

That it's not deep seated worry.
It's more a "Oops there's a Magpie. What's going to befall me, eh? Tee hee hee" sort of thing.
Magpies are a very common bird in this country. If I had a panic attack every time I saw one I'd be confined to bed by now.

All good luck and bad luck eventually cancel eachother out. That belief was one of the underlying themes of my trip to the States.

As [in a time where I was in trouble], I was at my mums, it was pouring down with rain outside, and we were in the conservartory and a butterfly came out of no-where (and I don't see where it could have come from), and I took that as a sign.

I've had it happen pretty much every damn time. If there's something I really want to have happen, I make no reference to it for this reason.

Basically, it's ronseal- if you have something really good potentially coming to you and you say something about it along the lines of "Hey, guess what? I've got a line on the coolest job ever!" it will invariably not work out. If you talk about something you're really hopeful about, somehow it will go tits up. If you tell people that you plan on your life going in a particular direction and you're formulating plans based on that, inevitably something will change to make it not come to be.
"Announcing your plans is a good way to hear God laugh."
