are playing with The Stooges when they perform Raw Power next spring.
Just thought I'd mention the mighty Stooges, y'know, to be controversial...

were a fucking brilliant band, and i was completely wetting myself at the prospect of seeing them in Glasgow, at the opening of a new venue The CCA.
We were in a pub across the venue, buying some beer, when i suggested we head over as they might be giving a away free beer, free HOEGARRDEN perhaps. We laughed at the madness of such an idea and continued drinking our fizzy pish. Eventually we decant to the venue and on entering see a reasonable queue of folk, all waiting to get, yes, you guessed it, free fucking Hoegaarden. Villified, yet still annoyed, we managed one half pint each before it ran out.
The place was completely rammed and the room in which Suicide were to play was on a 'one in one out' basis. We eventually cram our way in and then Suicide arrive on stage. OK, they are older, but that doesn't matter, OK, Alan Vega looks like a fat drug addict who can't sing a fucking note, no change there. Martin Rev look like a thin drug addict with a permed mullet and huge shades, no change there either. I gave them the benefit of the doubt for the first track, which i couldn't make out, it was just a rumbling noise with Vega yelping over th top of it. I vainly sghout out for 'Ghost Rider'......then to my horror, they started playing that very song, but it was like no version i had ever heard....it was like watching your drunk 60 year old uncle fail miserable at some sort of rude karaoke..It was terrible, awful, worse than i could have ever expected, I had to get out before the ruined everything, the whole mystique, their fucked up energy, everything
Jim Kerr of Simple Minds fame was standing next to us and i muttered loud enough for him to hear that 'this is fucking SHIT' and stormed out, allowing another helpless soul to gain entry. So after all that time waiting, i managed just 1.5 songs from Suicide...It really was that bad
Never got in to the Stooges, at all.

Kind of like my experience at Tortoise the other week - but I had no idea what they were about and thus had zero expectations. I was still surprised to find that they failed to meet those expectations.
