That's oaked Chardonnay
Like you I thought it was all filth until my brother-in-law served an unoaked one (like Chablis) one day, it was stunning. He has a collection worth 150k so whatever he serves or recommends I listen to.

And people say that will change as I get older. I'm not certain of that.

Manufacturers add oak flavouring

To cover bad Chardonnay,so if it's cheap and oaky it's probably crap.
