I think the drawback to UK plugsis that the cable come out of the bottom. Wouldn't it be more efficient to have it come out the middle US style?

Nobecause then people would try to pull out the plug by pulling on the cable. One big advantage of UK plugs is that it's difficult to do that, which means fewer accidental disconnections, and fewer problems with cables pulling out of the plug body.
