I nailed my job
by knowing about Freidel-Craft synthesis , not so cool
(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 19:58, 1 reply, 16 years ago)
I don't know what that is
but if you tell me I might think it's cool...

Its a way of adding hydrocarbons to other hydrocarbons
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedel%E2%80%93Crafts_reaction
(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 20:09, Reply)
I have a vague memory of hydrocarbons from GCSE chemistry
*puts on the SCIENCE glasses and reads* yes, it is cool.

ironcally, I dont have to use that at work
But today I got to use ultra high strength acid
(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 20:20, Reply)
Oooooo.
Occasionally I get to go the vault, that has a metal door a foot thick. And use staplers with inch-long points that go CLUNK. I can't compete ;)

(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 20:24, Reply)
Owww :( I have a huge burn mark on my left arm from an argument with a hot baking tray
and a very faded one on my right one from a run-in with a Swiss frying pan.

Sounds fancy
My old housemate was very possessive about her Swiss cookware. Plus I was ok, it was an alkali burn, those can be cured by washing the affected area with coke.

You learn something new every day :)
nah, this was crappy cheap stuff while I was living in Switzerland. I was cooking something and Stalker Girl started screeching for my attention so I turned and arm collided with hot pan...

coke also works on wasp stings
and oven cleaner burns
(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 21:01, Reply)
And scummy coins that have been in your washing machine filter since the dawn of time.

(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 21:01, Reply)
Its the phosphoric acid in it

(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 21:05, Reply)
It cleaned the coins up so far...
but the bus driver still looked at me funny.
(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 21:06, Reply)
it can also remove rust

(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 21:08, Reply)
That one I did know :)
I had an Italian professor at uni who hated us drinking Coke, because his uncle had worked in a Coke factory in Turin and tossed random things into the vat. "They all dissolved, so what is it doing to your insides, eh?"
(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 21:12, Reply)
and goes famously well with Bacardi...
and other spirits too.
not only that but orange juice and coke!
(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 21:18, Reply)
That's a German soft drink
I think it's called Mezzo Mix.
(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 21:28, Reply)
it was an old german guy who was a regular at a pub wherein i worked used to drink it...
3/4 pint coke and ice topped-up with 2 bottles britvic OJ
i will look out for the real stuff next time we are en-route to Poland, on the list with red/white sauce ;-)
(, Mon 7 Dec 2009, 21:42, Reply)
