I have noticed this with a lot of popular "comedians" and sit-coms
and have reasoned thus:

most people are stupid, and will laugh at "wacky" things, or even tripe like Gavin and Stacey.

I see it as a documentary, and I laugh.
I like the characters, as though they're real.
