My father does it deliberately sometimes,I am certain, to give the impression of ignorance about something he disapproves of, even though he knows perfectly well how it's said.
I'm struggling to think of an example - band names or popular culture stuff generally. Rather like the Fry & Laurie sketch where they go on about 'that ghastly Mervyn Briggs', meaning Melvyn Bragg.
As irrelevant posts go this is a corker.

that's the sort of thing my dad would dohe loves to describe things as 4th rate. The day I find myself doing that I will seriously think about ending it all.
