I've got both an iPhone (work)and an HTC Hero, so from that viewpoint:
- the Apple is overall "better" but in a way it's really hard to quantify.
- browsing on the Hero though with Flash etc is just better.
I'd recommend the Hero overall as no iTunes crap, you can take batteries out and swop them, and now it's been out 6 months you might get a good deal on it.

I'm looking at getting the heroSome good deals around for something that no-one seems to hate, which seems rare with mobile phones.
