I don't have a fancy camera by any means
merely a Canon Ixus 85, but the tripod thing does sound worthwhile.

I will likely only get a mini one however, as I don't want to be lugging something around.

how would you assess the wisdom of that move?

A mini one is good, better than nothing,
Not as much range obviously, but a definite boon

I still use a bean bag for resting the camera on
Good for resting on walls and rocks. Extreemly portable, and better than nothing when going up mountains or across bogs.

Tripods are best, but can be a bit of burden to carry all day.
