So we're spending Easter in Poland this year, visiting the In-Laws and we've just got back from church...
and i must say i rather enjoyed the high-catholic vibe.
odd that, what with me being an atheist and all. or maybe i'm a pantheist cos i think i believe that there is something in each and every one of us and all that we do if we let there be.
i must say, having been raised low-anglican i think all the bells&smells is pretty cool, but i'm not so struck on bumming the kids.

So my question is this, if you were tempted to adopt a faith on purely non-religious grounds then which one would you pick?

Buddhism
or indeed any of the ones with reincarnation. I quite like the idea of getting more than one go to get it right.

i find some views of reincarnation a bit scarey.
like if you fuck it up this time round and be a bit of a twat then next time you come back as a rat or something.
apart from that aspect (can't remember which faith) it seems cool.

Sikhism
You can carry a very nasty knife
I could wear a turban to hide being a baldy
You can ride a bike without a crash hat.
People tend not to fuck with you, because they are tall buggers, with beards and look feirce.

Satanism.
Not in a gay 'heavy metal, ooh evil' way but some of Anton La Vey's tracts on self-determination really struck a chord with me. I thought he was the ultimate helmet, with his 'Ming the Merciless' fashions and 'walking round San Fransisco with a panther on a chain' shit, but his background was the circus and the panto tactics employed gained him financial backing from imbeciles who wanted to be a bit 'shocking and weird'.

I assumed I'd hate the fellow and thought the Hollywood 'black magic' shit marked him out as an utter tosser, but was surprised to find in his writings an honest philosophical system that I found little to disagree with. He was advocating a kind of anti-religion where one shouldn't follow anyone and therefore shouldered all responsibility for one's actions, but ultimately due to his own presentation methods created ironically the precise opposite.

Judaism.
A big righteous smiting god who brooks no fucking around sounds fun.

Than again, maybe Norse Gods would do it? What's that? Does it have a name?

I lived in Stamford Hill
right in the middle of the Hassidic community for one summer, and if you saw the ridiculous things those people get up to because they thought God has dictated they did it, you would piss yourself.

If there was indeed a God and he genuinely wanted women to shave their heads and wear awful nylon wigs, and not lock their doors every Saturday and thus leave themselves wide open to burglary, I personally would struggle to revere such a perverse, Beadle-style practical joker. Their existence seems like some kind of ludicrous game of 'Simon says'.

God says 'wear a dressing gown'.
God says 'walk around the perimeter of your community in a weird procession once a year' etc.

No he fucking doesn't.
