my mate who went to see Dick Dale
took along part of his guitar to get signed, which is pretty cool, particularly as he plays in a surf band.

got to chat with the man as well. the bastard.

Excellent.
He's quite the raconteur. Most entertaining.

I like seeing legends like that
people who have been in the business for a long time have some great stories and a great stage presence.

Like Gordon Giltrap.

Sometimes they can be depressingly bad, though.
Dale was good NOW, as opposed to merely worth seeing because he used to be.

a good point
similar people I've seen have been awesome

like the Robert Plant gig. So good it hurt.

He's very much still 'got it', hasn't he?
I don't blame him for resisting the Led Zep reunion, much as I'm gutted from a personal point of view. If I was hitting the top ten with my current music I would be less inclined to hit the road with my old band from 40 years ago...

my view exactly
his current stuff, the Alison Krauss stuff and the Strange Sensation, is new and fresh and really very good.

I strongly suspect I will never see a gig as good as that. His presence and his voice were just incredible.

similarly Motorhead
are as good now as when I first saw them many, many years ago.

Disappointingly, Hawkwind have been terrible since the early 90s.

I greatly prefer the way he sounds these days
I'm really not fond of his girly, high-pitched shrieking on Led Zep records. Now that he's dropped an octave or two I think he's got a much better tone.

EDIT: And I'd agree with Monty re Hawkwind. Mind you, I thought they started losing it circa PXR5 when they let Bob Calvert read his poetry over the music.
