Its illegal to smoke weed, even if you claim to be taking it for medical reasons.
More often than not you won't get prosecuted. There are some canaboids that get used (as anti-emetics I think) in the treatment of chemo patients but its not the same as smoking a joint.

Nobody has ever pleaded medical necessity successfully as a defence to possession of a controlled drug, some MS suffers have tried though.

I've just realised that you might not be in the UK though...

I'm allowed to carry a certain amount on me, and am legally allowed to grow up to six plants myself.

No worries.
The law's still a bit contentious over here. If I were to travel to another State, the card would be ineffective. I certainly couldn't fly with any in possession, and to use it as a defence you'd have to submit all medical records.

In my case, I've got osteoarthritis in my knees and hips, and it helps with pain management.
