nikon 55-200 with VR
it's very pretty and shouldn't make a grinding noise like my old 70-200

edit: and the front optic is so damn clean, I thought it was missing - phwar

I had an old Nikon once, but nothing like as nice lens-wise.

I'm looking for some more lenses for my new Canon SLR at the moment, but is quite difficult to decide

a nice zoom between about 18-55 (if we're talking digital)
a bit longer zoom for special things. That covers most things, unless you do something specific. Those huge zooms get a bit slow.
