I have to plasterboard over a ceilingso am going to drill down through the dodgy plaster and lathe either side of the joists at each side of the room so I know where they are for screwing the plasterboard in.

Bite the bullet mate and take the lath and plaster ceiling down.It's worth it i the long run. Believe me, I learned the hard way.

there are reasons why that's not the best option in this situationbut you have just made something occur to me that might mean we have to do it anyway.
