Precisely.Debutantes wore frocks, and the more restricting they looked the more fashionable they were judged. And of course they were expensive.
Kicking against this exclusivity begat Punk.
So although the word has the essence of a long passed era, I persist with its use. Possibly because it is such an ugly word.
