I'm going to go with the alt and say YEARS ago
I'd loooooove to write letters to someone but these days, as you said with your mum and the email, it just seems a bit ridiculous
after reading a book in December it really made me want to do it, it referenced a store that sold handmade paper and talked about super expensive writing utensils and oh man, it made my head swim in excitement
but, we don't have anything like that around here :(

also, what the hell would you have to say to someone when writing a letter?
my dad has a load of post cards from the early 1900s and most of them say 'we stopped at suchandsuch diner, I had the chicken, Earl liked the coffee' etc
