Driving up the A3one day, I saw a fox hurtle across my carriageway towards the central reservation, only to get clouted by a car in the outside lane of the opposite carriageway. It went down in an explosion of fur and *immediately* it was back on its feet. It must have been instinct, though, as it went straight back down again and didn't get back up again.
