Then you have to delete everything you just typed and start again.

What really sucks is when you have to use several different programs at work: some that require caps lock and some that don't. Then you forget to either turn it on or off when switching programs.

One reason I like Microsoft Word
It usually catches that you've done that, fixes the text, and turns Caps Lock off. If not, select the text and hit Shift-F3 (I think it is).

Unfortunately, MS Word is only one of 6 different programs I have to use in my office. Only MS Word has a quick fix, none of the others have anyhing like that built in.

My haphazard, flailing finger style of typing...
means I frequently hit all manner of keys, including the 'insert' one. This is marvellously annoying when you amend an earlier part of a sentence, only to discover you've just overwritten the end of it...

Beeping Caps Lock!
For Windows, go in Control Panel and click on Accessibility/Ease of Access Centre, then click on Keyboard and select "Turn on Toggle Keys". Now you'll get a helpful system beep whenever Caps Lock is pressed.
