I read about this and although doom wasn;t the first kind of Fps it did it with a bit more finesse than wolfenstien did, and relesed sequels , it took wolfenstien near 8 years to give it a another go.
I agree about dune 2 completely although in the games industry anything based on a book or anythings that even midly based on anything always gets looked down upon as being unorginal.

And the less said about the modern prince of Persia sequels the better.
