Widescreen TVs that aren't set up properly
This is a rant at:

1. People like my old housemate, who couldn't bear to watch 4:3 programmes in 4:3 mode as "what's the point of paying for all that screen if you're not going to use it?", and would keep stretching the picture so everybody looked short and fat.

2. Pubs festooned with widescreen TVs and a Sky box set to centre cut-out, meaning a quarter of the picture's being thrown away and the remainder stretched to fit as above. Madness.

I agree!
I don't mind watching a 4:3 with black bars down the side. It's how it's supposed to be shown!
My dad has a widescreen LCD and was very annoyed that Raiders of the lost ark had bars top and bottom. I couldn't believe what I was hearing!

My dad insides on stretching the 4:3 picture to fit the screen, which my mum and I call 'toad mode' (because it makes everyone's face become short and fat like that of a toad). We end up watching tellies in different rooms because he refuses to put it in 4:3 mode and my mum and I don't want to watch the telly when it has a spaz picture.
