This is a question Political Correctness Gone Mad

Freddy Woo writes: "I once worked on an animation to help highlight the issues homeless people face in winter. The client was happy with the work, then a note came back that the ethnic mix of the characters were wrong. These were cartoon characters. They weren't meant to be ethnically anything, but we were forced to make one of them brown, at the cost of about 10k to the charity. This is how your donations are spent. Wisely as you can see."

How has PC affected you? (Please add your own tales - not five-year-old news stories cut-and-pasted from other websites)

Psychology experiment
The other day, I bumped into a friend of mine who I'd not seen in a while and we got chatting about the experiments we've been doing lately, and how bloody busy we've been (busy students? Never!). She was telling me about her experiment in psychology. The experiment involved the subject picking up a box and pretending to hand it to an invisible person while she takes measurements or something like that. Simple eh?

Well, they could only use right-handed people for the experiment. Of course, a few lefties turned up and it was only after they performed the experiment that they told her that they're left-handed, thus meaning about 20 minutes were wasted.

I was confused, "Why didn't you advertise for right-handed people?" I asked.

And she then explained it. Turns out the department doesn't allow them to advertise for righties only, as it's against discrimination laws.

If that isn't political correctness gone mad, I don't know what is.

They are not "subjects", they are "participants"

... but...
I and my colleagues have quite a lot to do with research ethics committees. If there was an experimentally valid reason why only righties could be used, there ought to have been no problem with advertising for righties only. If there was no scientifically valid reason - say, if it'd've meant having to go to the hassle of booking a different room - then fair enough.

Possibly a case of "half-a-story" and/ or the admin people getting unwarrantedly jumpy.

Enzyme
Quite possibly a case of admin being jumpy.

She explained that for some reason discrimination is fine and advertising righties-only is okay if they're using the MRI scanner. If not, then it's all PC.

You
can advertise for a specific trait (i.e. religion, colour, gender, handedness) where the job requires it. i.e. if it is a worker in a womans refuge, you can require that the applicant be female.

This just sounds like someone being an idiot.
